I read this article today, CPS Hopes to Improve Sex Education and STD Prevention for Chicago Teens, and I must say how disgusted, outraged, and saddened I am! The City of Chicago is ranked #1 in the number of reported cased of Chlamydia and #2 for Gonorrhea between the ages of 15 – 19 in the nation. Not the city but the nation! This doesn’t take into account the surrounding suburban areas. This is strictly within the city limits.
What is going on with our youth? Who is to blame for this problem, the parents, sex-ed teachers, media, the community? Who?!?
One of my long-standing passions is helping and talking to young girls. The girls who fall within this same age range. The stories I hear from them are astounding! Young girls in high school contracting STD’s and the boy’s mother blaming the girl calling her dirty! Young girls thinking it’s cute to have sex with multiple men at the same time. Young girls thinking it’s acceptable, and cute, to be part of threesomes and orgys and getting paid for sex.***holding my head rubbing my temples, deep breath*** I’m getting infuriated thinking about this. I usually don’t buy in to statistics because they can be manipulated to prove whatever or whomever’s point but I know this one is not far off from reality.
I can speak of parent’s who would rather party than be with their child(ren). Parents seem to fail to understand that kids of any age emulate what they see not listen to their words. If they see their parent partying, lying, cheating, stealing, they will inevitably engage in the same behavior. What happened to the old school parents? The ones who cared more about their kids than themselves. The ones who prided themselves on their kids success instead of blaming everyone else for their failure. It all starts at home folks!
I don’t think the media is the problem but it definitely perpetuates it. All this sex and menages and all this sensualism all over the TV, on the radio, in the videos, in the music. Kids are inundated with it. As this happens, they are listening to each other about their experiences and going with the flow, not fully understanding what they are even engaging in. Have you seen this girls going to parties in the panties and bra? I mean really. What happened to leave a bit to the imagination. These young girls are having sex in the parking lots, in the bathrooms, at party’s, wherever and whenever. This is the result, STD’s!
What’s it going to take to make these kids understand they are playing russian roulette with their lives? AIDS is rampant and this behavior and lack of self-respect is only perpetuating the problem. The article talks about how Walgreens has started an initiative with the Chicago Public Schools to heighten the awareness of STD’s. Kudos to you Walgreens. They have even went as far as to setting up clinics adjacent to some of the schools were the diseases are encountered on a large-scale.
We have to do more to help our young people. Condoms are there friends despite the popular thing of not wearing them. STD’s can be spread through fellatio and cunnilingus! Luckily, Chlamydia and gonorrhea are both curable. But I wonder how many of these kids has Herpes (which can go unnoticed with no symptoms) and does not even know it?
I encourage everyone who reads this article to first educate yourself and then educate a child! You could be saving their life!
